A robust technical foundation is what your content rankings sit on. Content does the heavy lifting of relevance and earns the links, but without the technical groundwork below your search performance will always be held back.

Website architecture

Your site architecture is like a mind map: it tells search engines what links to what, and what does not. A well organised site does more than look tidy, it guides crawlers to your key pages and helps them get indexed. A site audit reveals the common pitfalls, chiefly orphan pages (pages nothing links to), neglected index and category pages that can be valuable hubs when handled well, accessibility against minimum standards, and broken pages that waste a crawler's effort.

XML sitemaps

Think of an XML sitemap as a map that leads search engines straight to your valuable content, and submit it through Google Search Console. The one rule that trips people up: your sitemap should accurately represent the current pages of your site. Do not feed it orphan pages, or pages you have blocked from being crawled.

Robots.txt and robots meta tags

Your robots.txt file is the gatekeeper: it points crawlers at the pages that matter and signals what should not be crawled. A classic mistake when a site goes live is accidentally blocking important pages, or blocking CSS and JavaScript, which harms how well Google understands and renders your site. Robots meta tags then give you per-page control, telling search engines whether to index a page and whether to follow its links.

On-page elements (OSO)

We use the acronym OSO for On Site Optimisation. The basics matter more than people think. Title tags should be unique to each page and lead with the keyword, previewing the content that follows. Meta descriptions should read like ad copy: persuasive, and short enough not to be truncated (around 150 to 160 characters); we sometimes ask our Google Ads specialists to help write them. URL structure is closer to good copywriting than pure technical work, but clear, descriptive, keyword-bearing URLs help both visitors and search engines.

Structured data and rich snippets

Structured data translates your page into schema markup, a format search engines digest easily. For an ecommerce site it can turn a plain listing into an eye-catching rich snippet showing price and star ratings, right there in the results. The order of play: earn a page-one ranking first, then watch which snippets Google is generating and make a considered play for them, page by page and keyword by keyword.

Speed and Core Web Vitals

Pages that load slowly slip down the rankings and lose the visitors who will not wait. Google has been clear that load speed influences rankings, and its PageSpeed Insights tool, together with Core Web Vitals in Search Console, tells you where to focus. A content distribution network (CDN) serves your images and files from a location near each visitor so pages load quickly worldwide. Reducing server response time, optimising images and cutting redirects all shave milliseconds off every load, forever. Speed work is most effective as an ongoing process, not a one-off.

Mobile-first

Google indexes and ranks the mobile version of your site first. A site that is not optimised for mobile is like a shop with an unreadable sign, turning people away before they see what you offer. Responsive design lets every element resize and reposition smoothly across screen sizes, and a fast, easy mobile experience keeps people on the page. Google measures that dwell time, and longer, more satisfying visits feed back into better rankings.

Crawl errors and broken links

Crawl errors and broken links are the stumbling blocks referred to at the top of this page: easy to overlook, but they quietly erode the visitor experience. We sweep the whole architecture, right down to individual pages, so every link reaches a relevant destination. Internal links are a huge driver of what a crawler can infer about each page and its place in your site. There is a semantic overlap here too: a "relevant destination" depends on keyword research and topical relevance, not just on the plumbing being sound.

Duplicate content and canonicalisation

Duplicate or near-duplicate pages confuse search engines by presenting several similar versions of the same thing. Canonical tags hint which page is the primary source. Keep one definitive version, and when you use canonical and hreflang tags together, coordinate them carefully so they support rather than conflict with each other.

Security and HTTPS

Security is a baseline expectation. At minimum a site needs an SSL certificate and HTTPS, or browsers will warn visitors that it is "not secure". Beyond that, web application firewalls, security headers and sound human habits (email and password security) harden your site: be a tougher target than the next site an attacker finds, and reduce the chance of an incident that would knock your rankings, even temporarily. On WordPress, the pragmatic way to stay safe is a maintenance and security service that scans and updates regularly.

International SEO and hreflang

Reaching audiences in more than one language or region turns technical SEO into International SEO, and its core feature is hreflang tags. These act like multilingual business cards, telling search engines the language and geographic target of each page and where to find its alternative versions. Google treats hreflang as a hint rather than a command, so it takes time to take effect and is easy to get wrong, which is exactly why coordination with your canonical tags matters.
