Quick SEO OnPage Tips

Do you have a basic idea of SEO and WordPress and want to try and do some SEO yourself? We’ve provided some quick onpage tips that you can do yourself to help with your online marketing. Some of these changes are pretty easy while others can only be done at the very beginning.

Before you make any other on page changes, make sure that your content is unique to the page, engages the reader to read the content, and provides natural steps for them to continue on in your website.

Basic SEO OnPage Tips

Keyword In The Domain
This does depend on the competitiveness of the industry you are in, but having the keyword in the domain has been suggested to give a slight boost to your overall rankings. From a users perspective having what your website is about as a part of the URL can assist the visitor in choosing your webpage over a competitor i.e. having a website "petinsuranceaustralia.com.au" can help visitors who are looking for "pet insurance". It’s also important to make sure that the name still flows when thinking of a new domain.

Keyword In The URL
A URL describes what the page is about to users, so you want to make the URL as descriptive as possible. Is the page you want to rank for about red woolen jumpers? Adding that into the URL will show to the user, and can help increase the Click Through Rate (CTR) of that particular page. Make sure not to have URLs that are too long as if it is over 2,048 characters, browsers won’t load the page. Also don’t stuff keywords into the URL, it looks spammy and will not end well for the page.

Keywords In The Copy Of The Page
Adding keywords into the body text (copy) of your page will show users that the page is relevant to what they were searching for. There are a number of places to add the keywords including:

  • Header Tags - Make sure that you H1 tag has your targeted keyword in it, and only have 1 H1 tag on the page.
  • Title Tags - Title tags on your website should be limited to 55 characters to ensure that the title will fit on the search engine page.
  • Meta Description Tag - Your Meta description should be limited to 155 characters is traffic primarily comes from desktop, or 120 if your traffic is primarily from mobile devices.
  • Body Copy - Keywords should be placed in the body of your website however make sure that the content still flows naturally, and is not being stuffed.

A lot of people tend to forget about the images they put on their website, they just put them on and focus on other areas. It is advised to add your keywords to images by placing them in the image title and alt tags. The reason for this is if the image ever break or people have trouble seeing it, hovering over the image will give a description of what the image is.  With this in mind make sure that the tags are relative to the image itself. Make sure that the image tags are not keyword stuffed and are different across the board, otherwise this could affect your SEO efforts.
